The mountains of NE Alabama are full of many delightful surprises that entertain the mind, body and senses. Enjoy nature hikes through state and national parks and preserves, view scenic waterfalls and majestic overlooks, ride your bike through forested paths that lead to hidden waterfalls and pristine brooks and fly fish from the Little River. Feeling a little more adventurous? Go horseback riding at a Dude Ranch, rappel from sheer rock cliffs, Snow Ski at Cloudmont Ski Resort, kayak the raging Little River and go underground to the "Looking Glass Lakes" at Sequoyah Caverns.

DeKalb County State Public Fishing Lake offers some of the finest fishing in NE Alabama.

DeKalb County State Public Fishing Lake - This 120-acre state lake offers some of the finest fishing in NE Alabama. Bass fishing, bluegill and redear sunfish, catfish, and crappie make fishing DeKalb Lake fun all four seasons. There is a playground and picnic area, country store and campground. The lake is open 7 days a week from sun-up to sun-down and is located on Sand Mountain at 720 County Rd. 194 in Sylvania. 256-657-1300

Fort Payne Depot Museum & Depot Annex - This beautiful pink sandstone Richardson Romanesque architecture 1891 depot was operated b y the Alabama Great Southern Railroad. It served as a train station until 1970. It now houses railroad memorabilia, Dioramas handcrafted back in 1913, Indian Artifacts, local history and more! Located on 105 5th Street North, in downtown Fort Payne, Alabama 35967.  Hours of operation are Wed. - Fri. 10:00a.m. until 3:00p.m. and Sunday 2:00p.m. until 4:00p.m. Closed major holidays. Fort Payne City Park - Located in downtown Fort Payne on the corner of 5th and Gault Avenue North, across from the Depot Museum. The park provides the perfect setting for picnics and family reunions. It holds a wealth of history, from historic markers flanking the outskirts of the park to the century old Ginko trees that fill the park with a cool shade in the summer and an amber glow of foliage in the fall. Fort Payne Hosiery Museum -  Located on Gault Ave. near 5th Street North, in downtown Fort Payne.  Hours of operation are Thurs - Sat 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.  The docent at the Museum can also give interested visitors a tour of the Historic Opera House during these hours as well. Fort Payne Motor Speedway – Let’s Go Racing!!!
Come enjoy a family night out with racing on the 2nd and 4th Saturday Nights of the month beginning at 5 p.m. Fort Payne Motor Speedway is a part of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series, which includes tracks in multiple states. Drivers at each track compete for regional points. Landmarks Opera House - This structure was built in 1889 by W.O. Rice and was known as the "handsomest opera house in the state." Having been restored by a group called Landmarks, productions are once again brought to the stage. It is the oldest opera house in the state still in use today. Located downtown Fort Payne, Alabama. The Little River Canyon Center located on Lookout Mountain in Alabama.

Little River Canyon Center - This center is a Jacksonville State University facility operated in partnership with the National Park Service.  Located on Hwy 35 and adjacent to the Little River Canyon National Preserve, it serves multiple functions as a center for outdoor interpretation, architectural sustainability, cultural demonstration and it serves as an administrative center for its related agencies.  Visitors may experience an array of Field School activities including wildlife watching, hikes, and other family oriented programs.  The Canyon Center includes public restrooms, walking trails, exhibits, a gift shop, a library, an auditorium and meeting rooms which may be rented by the half or full day.  For more information please call 256-845-3548.

The Little River Canyon National Preserve is one of the deepest canyons east of the Mississippi.

 

Little River Canyon National Preserve - Enjoy scenic vistas and waterfalls along the beautiful Little River Canyon National Preserve. Bring lots of film, you will want to capture the beauty of this area forever. Follow a 23-mile drive along the canyon's rim for spectacular vistas into the 700-foot deep gorge. Visit Little River Falls off Hwy. 35 in Fort Payne, Alabama.   A world of nature all around you and it's FREE. Sallie Howard Memorial Chapel - Built by Colonel Milford Howard as a memorial to his first wife, this stone church is built around a huge boulder. The boulder serves as the pulpit of the church and is also where Howard's ashes are interred. A sentence, penned to Howard in a letter from his wife hangs over the pulpit. It states "God has all ways been as good to me as I would let him be." Services are held each Sunday in the chapel and it is also a popular place for weddings.
